In the street market – Lesson 1 I.OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to: - pronounce the sound of the letter A/a. - say the words apple, bag, can, hat. II. Warm-up – Listen and repeat – Point and say – PROCEDURE Game - Homelink Procedure Teaching and learning activities Classroom management Warm-up 5 minutes - Greet the class and introduce your name. Have pupils Whole class greet and introduce themselves. - Option 1: Have one group of pupils sing the song on p. 11 in front of the class. The class claps their hands. - Option 2: Invite one pupil to sing the song with his/her own lyrics. - Option 3: Give pupils some flashcards (of a car, cup, cat, cake, book, bike, ) and let him/her talk about possession, e.g. I have a car. - Have pupils open the books and look at Unit 3, Lesson 1 p. 14, saying Open the books and look at Unit 3, Lesson 1 (Page 14). 1. Listen and repeat 10 minutes Step 1: Open books open or access sachmem. Have pupils look Whole class at the picture, saying Look at the picture, please! and answer some questions such as Who are they? Where are they? And What are they doing? Draw pupils’ attention to the words next to the things and the colour of the letter A/a (as mentioned in Input in Teacher’s guide). Check comprehension. Ask pupils to point to the letter A/a. - Tell pupils to point to the hat and the word hat, saying Point to the hat and the word “hat”. Give further support to those pupils who find it difficult to do the Group work task. Step 5: Call a few pupils to pronounce the sound of the letter A/a and say the words apple, bag, can, hat in front of the class (you may say Great! when they perform well). Whole class Step 6: 2. Point and say 10 minutes Step 1: Have pupils look at the picture again, saying Look at the Whole class picture, please! Ask them to describe the picture. Draw their attention to the letter A/a and the things, if necessary. Get them to point to the letter A/a and say it, saying Point to the letter A/a and say, please! Step 2: Ask pupils to point to the apple and say the word apple Individual as a model, saying Point and say, please! Then ask one work pupil to point to the apple and to say the word apple in front of the class. Correct pronunciation, if necessary. Follow the same procedure with other things. Go around Step 3: and correct pronunciation, if necessary. Individual Ask pupils to work in pairs or in groups to look at the work Step 4: picture, point to the letter A/a, the things and say the Pair or group sound of the letter A/a and the words. Go around, offer work help and correct pronunciation, if necessary. Invite a few pupils to point to the picture and say the sound of the letter and the words in front of the class. If Step 5: they performed well, praise them, saying Well done! or Whole class Very good! Fun corner Hot seat 7 minutes Step 1: Tell pupils that they are going to play the game Hot Whole class seat. Explain how the game is played (as mentioned in the steps below). Check comprehension.
- Divide the class into teams of four pupils. Call one pupil Step 2: from each team to sit on the “hot seat”, facing the Group work classroom with the board behind. Write a word on the board, e.g. bag. Ask one of the Step 3: team members to describe it to help the pupil in the “hot Group work seat” guess the word. Continue until each team member has described a word Step 4: to the pupil in the “hot seat”. Give one star for each Group work right word. The team gets more stars will win. With a better class, after the pupils become experts at the game, you can increase the difficulty. Write the Extension: words that pupils have learnt in the previous units such as ball, cake, cup, . Homelink 3 minutes Option 1: Pupils practise pronouncing the sound of the letter A/a Whole class and saying the words bag, can, hat, apple (using Student’s books or sachmem). Option 1: Pupils play Hot seat with the words bag, apple, hat, can in sachmem. Option 1: Pupils do the project on page 9 in Workbook.

PROCEDURE Warm-up – Listen and chant – Listen and tick – Look and trace - Homelink Classroom Procedure Teaching and learning activities manageme nt Warm-up 5 minutes - Greet the class and introduce yourself, saying: Hi. I’m Whole class + name. Encourage pupils to greet and introduce their names, e.g. Hi, I’m Hoa. - Option 1: Invite a few pupils to point to the picture/poster and pronounce the sound of the letter A/a and say the words bag, can, hat, apple. - Option 2: Ask a group of four to play Hot seat with the target vocabulary they have learnt. - Option 3: Have pupils do the projet (page 6) in pairs or groups. - Get pupils to open their books and look at Lesson 2, p. 15 (saying Open the books and look at lesson 2, please!). 3. Listen and chant 10 minutes Step 1: Open books or access sachmem. Have pupils look at the Whole class chant. Say Look at the chant, please! Draw pupils’ attention to the first verse and explain its meaning. Ask them to pay attention to the letter A/a and the words apple, bag and the sentence There’s an apple in the bag.
- Check comprehension. Play the recording for pupils to listen and to get Step 2: familiarized with the tune, saying Listen to the Individually verse, please! Then play the recording again, ask pupils to listen and repeat, line by line, saying Listen again and repeat, please! After that, play the recording for them to listen and repeat until they feel confident. Give further support to those pupils who find it difficult to do the task. Follow the same procedure with the verse. Show pupils Step 3: how to chant and clap their hands. Correct pronunciation, Whole class if necessary. and Play the recording all the way through. Ask pupils to individual Step 4: listen and repeat the chant individually and in chorus, work saying Listen and chant, please! Put the class into two groups to practise chanting and Step 5: clapping. Each of the groups should sing one verse of the Group work chant. If there is enough time, invite some groups to the front of Step 6: the class to chant and clap their hands. The rest of the Whole class class may clap their hands along to the rhythm. Say Excellent! when they perform well. For a better class, encourage pupils to change some lines of the chant and sing it in front of the class. E.g. Extension: There’s a cat on the hat. There’s an apple in the bag. There’s a bag on the table. There’s a can on the table. 4. Listen and tick 7 minutes Step 1: Have pupils point to the pictures of Question 1 and say what Whole class they can see, saying Can you a can and an apple? Draw pupils’ attention to the boxes next to the letters a and b. Check comprehension. Step 2: Invite some pupils to point to the pictures and say the words Whole class in front of the class, saying Point to the pictures and say, please! E.g. 1a: a can, 1b: an apple. Step 3: Play the recording of the first phrase for pupils to listen. Individual Ask pupils to say what they have heard and ticked. Say work What did you hear? Did you hear “a can” or “an apple”? Yes, it said “a can”. So tick the box a. Follow the same procedure with Question 2. Give further Step 4: support to those pupils who find it difficult to do the task. Individual Call a few pupils to the front of the class to point to the work pictures and say what they have heard. E.g. 1. a can, 2. a Step 5: hat. Whole class 5. Look and trace 10 minutes
- Step 1: Access sachmem. Have pupils look at the letter A (upper Whole class case) and the letter a (lower case). Say What can you see? Point to the upper case A and say This is the upper case A. Then point to the lower case a and say and this is the lower case a. Ask some pupils to make sure if they Individual Step 2: recognize the two forms of the letter. Then have pupils work look at sachmem and identify how the letter a (upper case and lower case) is traced. Ask pupils to trace the letter A/a, saying Now trace the Pair work Step 3: letter A/a with your pencils. You can demonstrate by air tracing or tracing the broken lines of the letter A/a on the board. Then let pupils do the tracing. Give further support to those pupils who find it difficult to do the task. Ask pupils to work in pairs and swap their answers, saying Now work in pairs and check each other’s answer. Give pupils time to work. Go around and offer help, if necessary. Have some pupils show what they have done. Praise them if they have done well, saying Well done! If time allows or with better classes, make a broken line on the board and invite some pupils to write the letter A/a.
