A father tells his son:

Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. When people can’t do something themselves, they’re gonna tell you that you can’t do it. You want something, go get it. 

Note: gotta = have got to

    gonna = going to

  3. A. COMMUNICATION Work in pairs. Discuss the extract and prepare a short talk expressing your opinion about it. You can use the following questions to guide you. A father tells his son: Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. When people can’t do something themselves, they’re gonna tell you that you can’t do it. You want something, go get it. Note: gotta = have got to gonna = going to

What kind of person does the father want his son to grow up to be? The father wants his son to grow up to be confident, self- reliant, determined, independent 2. What does the father mean by saying “You got a dream, you gotta protect it” and “You want something, go get it”? “You got a dream, you gotta protect it” means everyone has dreams, so when we have dreams, we have to try our best to make the dreams become realistic. “You want something, go get it” means that we have to nurture our dreams and we are determined to do our best to achieve our goals.
  6. You will see some pictures about the ways people raise their children in Vietnam and in America and guess whether each action happens in Vietnam or in America.

  8. Task 1. Read the two passages about how American and Vietnamese parents raise their children and answer the questions. 1. According to many Americans, what is the most important task of parents? → It is to teach their children to live independently. 2. What do Vietnamese parents think their role is? → Their role is to protect their children and to provide them with a happy and wealthy childhood. 3. How do American parents help their kids to become self-reliant? → They make them do things such as washing, cleaning and cooking for themselves from the time they are very small. 4. Are Vietnamese children allowed to join their parents in making family choices? → No. Vietnamese parents seldom ask for their children’s opinions before making family choices. 5. How do American parents help to develop their children’s confidence? → They show respect for them and let them voice their opinions on family issues . 6. When do Vietnamese children move out of their parents’ home? → After they get married.
